This calculator first converts whatever pay rate and frequency you enter into a weekly figure, since a week converts cleanly to a year (exactly 52 weeks), then expands that weekly figure back out to every other frequency. Converting to hourly or daily uses your entered hours per week or days per week, since those aren't fixed the way weeks-per-year is.
Semi-monthly (paid twice a month, 24 pay periods a year) is calculated from the annual figure directly (annual ÷ 24) rather than from weekly, since semi-monthly periods don't line up evenly with weeks, an important distinction from biweekly (paid every two weeks, 26 pay periods a year), which is often confused with semi-monthly but is a different schedule entirely.
Biweekly means every 2 weeks, 26 paychecks a year, and occasionally 27 in a year with an extra pay period. Semi-monthly means twice a month, always 24 paychecks a year, typically on fixed dates like the 15th and the last day of the month. Because 26 and 24 are different numbers, the same annual salary produces a different per-paycheck amount under each schedule, which is why this calculator treats them as distinct frequencies rather than treating semi-monthly as 'half of biweekly'.
Converting to or from an hourly or daily rate depends on how many hours or days you actually work in a week, which varies by job, so this calculator asks for those instead of assuming a fixed number.
No, this calculator converts a known pay rate across frequencies assuming a standard schedule with no overtime. The Hourly Wage Calculator instead builds up a paycheck from an hourly rate and actual hours worked, including overtime pay at a higher rate.
No, it assumes you're paid for 52 weeks a year at the schedule you enter. If you have unpaid leave, adjust your inputs accordingly for a more accurate annual figure.
