Needed Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight, where Final Weight is entered as a decimal (30% becomes 0.3). This works backward from your target overall grade to find what the final exam alone needs to contribute.
For example, with a 75% current grade, a final exam worth 30% of your overall grade, and a target of 80% overall: needed score = (80 − 75 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (80 − 52.5) ÷ 0.3 = 91.67%, meaning you'd need a 91.67% on the final exam alone to bring your overall grade up to 80%.
If the calculated needed score is above 100%, your target grade isn't reachable no matter how well you do on the final, given your current grade and the exam's weight. If it's below 0%, you've already secured your target grade regardless of the final exam score.
Entering the final exam's weight as a whole number percentage where a decimal was expected (or vice versa), this calculator expects the weight field as a percentage like 30 (for 30%), it converts internally, entering 0.3 instead of 30 would produce a nonsensical result.
Confusing 'current grade' with just your most recent test score, current grade should reflect your overall grade in the course so far (all assignments, tests, etc. before the final), not a single recent assignment score.
Assuming a result over 100% means to just aim for the highest possible score, it actually means the target grade is mathematically unreachable given your current grade and the final's weight, no achievable final exam score gets you there, the target itself needs to be revised.
Enter it as accurately as possible, for example 25.5 for 25.5%. Check your course syllabus for the exact weighting if you're unsure.
A negative result means you've already reached your target grade regardless of the final. A result over 100% means the target isn't achievable given your current grade and the final's weight.
