This tool converts between data transfer rate units using fixed decimal conversion factors, following standard networking convention, for example, 1 megabit per second equals 1,000 kilobits per second, and 1 byte per second equals 8 bits per second. Enter a value in any supported unit and it's converted to all others using these standard ratios.
Internet plans are advertised in bits per second (like '500 Mbps'), but file download progress in a browser or app is typically shown in bytes per second (like 'MB/s'), and there are 8 bits in a byte. A 500 Mbps connection therefore tops out around 62.5 MB/s in a download manager, which can look surprisingly low compared to the advertised number even when everything is working correctly.
Divide megabits per second by 8 to get megabytes per second, since there are 8 bits in a byte.
This converter uses decimal (1000-based) prefixes, the standard convention for network transfer rates. Our Data Storage Converter, by contrast, uses binary (1024-based) prefixes, matching how file sizes are typically measured.
