This calculator divides your room's area by a single tile's area to find the number of tiles needed to cover it, then adds your chosen waste percentage on top to account for cuts, breakage and pattern matching, before rounding up to a whole number of tiles.
10% is a common default for straight tile layouts. Diagonal layouts, rooms with lots of corners or fixtures, or large-format tiles that are harder to cut efficiently often warrant a higher allowance, sometimes 15-20%.
No, this calculator uses the tile's stated size and doesn't separately account for grout line width, which has only a small effect on the total tile count for most standard grout widths.
It's a good idea to round up to the nearest full box, and consider keeping a few extra tiles on hand for future repairs, since matching a discontinued tile later can be difficult.
