Our original Gravel Calculator handles rectangular areas with a single fixed gravel density. This calculator adds support for circular areas (like a round fire pit surround) and triangular areas (like an odd-shaped corner bed), and lets you choose from several common gravel material types, crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, or decomposed granite, each with its own typical density, so the weight estimate better matches the specific material you're buying.
Rectangle area is length × width. Circle area uses π × radius², with the diameter you enter divided by 2 to get the radius. Triangle area is 0.5 × base × height. Once the area is found, it's multiplied by depth (converted from inches to feet) to get volume, then converted to cubic yards and weight using your chosen gravel type's density.
Crushed stone (angular, interlocking) is common for driveways and drainage. Pea gravel (small, rounded) is popular for pathways and decorative beds. River rock (larger, rounded) is often used decoratively. Decomposed granite is popular for pathways with a more natural, compactable surface. Each has a slightly different typical density, reflected in this calculator's weight estimate.
