Our Word Counter reports overall word, sentence and paragraph statistics for general writing. This tool is purpose-built for the 'how many characters do I have left' use case, tracking your text against a specific character limit, like a tweet (280), SMS (160), or meta description (roughly 155-160), so you can see at a glance whether you're within range.
Different platforms and fields enforce different character limits for different technical or design reasons, SMS messages are limited by the underlying telecom protocol, while a meta description limit is really about how much text search engines display before truncating it. Set the limit field to match whatever you're writing for.
A 137-character piece of text against the default 280-character limit (a tweet) shows 143 characters remaining and 48.9% of the limit used, well within range. If that same text were checked against a 155-character meta description limit instead, it would show only 18 characters remaining, 88.4% used, illustrating why the same text can be comfortably short for one platform and nearly maxed out for another.
Leaving the character limit at its default (280) when writing for a different platform, always set it to match your actual target, 160 for SMS, roughly 155-160 for a meta description, or whatever your specific platform enforces.
Assuming every platform counts characters the same way, some platforms count certain Unicode characters (like emoji) as more than one character internally, which can cause a small mismatch between what this tool reports and what the platform itself enforces.
Not accounting for the space a link or hashtag takes up on platforms that auto-shorten URLs, some social platforms count a long URL as a fixed shorter length regardless of its actual character count, which this general-purpose counter has no way to know about.
Yes, the main character count includes spaces and punctuation, matching how most platforms count characters toward their limits. A separate 'characters without spaces' figure is also shown for reference.
No, all counting happens directly in your browser, your text is never transmitted anywhere.
