The fuel cost formula is: Fuel Needed = Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency, and Total Cost = Fuel Needed × Fuel Price. For example, a 300-mile trip in a vehicle averaging 15 miles per gallon needs 300 ÷ 15 = 20 gallons of fuel, costing 20 × 1.50 = 30 at 1.50 per gallon.
To estimate gas cost accurately, use your vehicle's real-world fuel efficiency (from a recent fill-up) rather than the official rated efficiency, since actual driving conditions, speed and load typically use more fuel than laboratory test ratings suggest.
Using your vehicle's official rated fuel efficiency instead of your actual real-world efficiency from a recent fill-up, real-world driving (traffic, hills, AC use) typically uses more fuel than the rated figure, understating your actual trip cost.
Mixing unit systems, like entering distance in kilometers but efficiency in miles per gallon, this tool doesn't convert between systems, all three inputs need to use one consistent set of units (see our Fuel Economy Calculator if you need to convert your efficiency figure first).
Forgetting that this calculates fuel cost only, not total trip cost, tolls, parking, and vehicle wear aren't included, budget separately for those if you need a full trip cost estimate.
Use any consistent unit system, for example miles for distance with miles-per-gallon for efficiency and price-per-gallon for fuel price, or kilometers with kilometers-per-liter and price-per-liter. As long as all three inputs use matching units, the result will be accurate.
