Lean body mass (LBM) is your total body weight minus fat mass, everything else, muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue and water. This calculator uses the Boer formula, one of the most widely cited equations for estimating LBM from just height and weight, without needing a direct body fat measurement: for men, LBM = 0.407 × weight (kg) + 0.267 × height (cm) − 19.2, and for women, LBM = 0.252 × weight (kg) + 0.473 × height (cm) − 48.3.
Lean body mass is often used as a more accurate basis than total body weight for things like protein intake recommendations, medication dosing, and tracking body composition changes during training, since two people at the same weight can have very different amounts of muscle versus fat, and it's often the lean mass that's more relevant to these calculations.
Formula-based estimates like the Boer formula are reasonably accurate for most people but are still estimates, not direct measurements. Methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing give more precise results if you need clinical-grade accuracy.
Men and women have different average proportions of muscle, bone density and body water, so the Boer formula uses different coefficients for each to produce more accurate estimates.
