This tool converts between power units using fixed conversion factors, for example, 1 horsepower equals about 745.7 watts, or 0.7457 kilowatts. Enter a value in any supported unit and it's converted to all others using these standard ratios.
Watts and kilowatts are the SI standard used for electrical appliances and generators. Horsepower is traditionally used for rating vehicle and small engine output. BTU per hour is common for rating heating and air conditioning capacity in the US.
Converting a 200 horsepower engine to kilowatts gives approximately 149.14 kW (200 × 0.745699872), useful when comparing a US-spec engine rating against a metric spec sheet that lists power in kW instead.
Treating mechanical horsepower and metric horsepower as identical, they're close (745.7 W vs 735.5 W) but differ by about 1.4%, enough to matter when comparing precise spec sheets from different regions.
Confusing power (the rate energy is used or produced, watts) with energy itself (joules or kWh), a 100-watt bulb run for 10 hours uses 1 kWh of energy, watts alone don't tell you total energy consumed without a time component.
Assuming BTU/h and BTU are the same unit, BTU/h is a rate of energy transfer (power), while BTU alone is a quantity of energy, mixing them up is a common error when reading HVAC specifications.
Multiply horsepower by 0.7457 to get kilowatts, or use this converter for an instant result.
This converter uses mechanical horsepower (745.7 watts), the most common definition. A small number of contexts use metric horsepower, which is very close but not identical (735.5 watts).
